Program : In 1609, Galileo revolutionized our perception of the universe with his observations of the sky. Students will re-live his experience as they help the great scientist with his ground-breaking discoveries, learning about fundamentals of the scientific method along the way. Students are then introduced to modern achievements using advanced telescopes with particular attention on the Hubble Telescope. This program includes interactive presentation, historical characterization, and multimedia sequences.

Grade Level
: 4th-6th

Program Length : 60 minutes (35 to 40 min. presentation / 20-25 min activity)

Activity Options :

Mapping the Invisible Universe
A series of exercises help students understand how images of celestial objects beyond the visible spectrum are created and used.


Smudge Art
Students are taught how to recreate beautiful nebulae images with ink and chalk.


Suggested Workshop Add-on :

Refraction in Action
25 to 30 minutes, students learn about the focal length of lenses as they are challenged to build a refraction device.
